Tooth Extraction
What is a Tooth Extraction?
Extractions are a way to remove a problematic tooth from your child’s mouth. We ensure that all extractions are done easily, quickly and comfortably in our office. Extractions can help to make room for permanent teeth to come in as well as to remove other teeth that could pose a problem to your child’s oral health. While we always strive to preserve healthy teeth as much as possible, there may come a time when the only option is an extraction.
Why would a Tooth Extraction be necessary?
There are several reasons why your child might need to have one or more teeth extracted. We might need to remove stubborn baby teeth that aren’t coming out on their own. Likewise, it’s not uncommon to need extractions prior to a child undergoing orthodontic care. If a tooth is severely decayed or damaged, we might recommend having it removed. For impacted, painful wisdom teeth, we’ll recommend that they be taken out as soon as possible.
What makes your child a good candidate for a Tooth Extraction?
We strive to make the extraction process as easy and quick as possible. We are able to perform an exam prior to the extraction to ensure there is no other way to save the tooth. If an extraction is needed, be aware that we offer many sedative options to make the appointment more comfortable. If your child needs to have one or more teeth removed, it’s a good idea to have them come in for treatment as soon as possible to prevent their oral health from being impacted.
What happens during the Tooth Extraction process?
The first step is to provide your child with sedation or anesthetic to numb the area. We will then loosen and remove the tooth using specialized dental instruments and tools. From there, sutures are placed, if needed, to help close the gums. Your child will bite down on a piece of gauze to stop any bleeding before leaving the office. You will be provided with important aftercare instructions that can help teach you how to keep the area clean and free of any post-operative complications.
