Dental Fillings
What are Dental Fillings?
A dental filling is specifically meant to replace areas in a tooth that have decayed. Because it is common for kids to be susceptible to tooth decay, it’s just as common for them to require fillings. We use tooth-colored fillings to restore your child’s smile, since they can be placed in any tooth within the mouth. Tooth-colored fillings can last for quite awhile before replacement is needed.
Why might Dental Fillings be needed?
The reason your child might need a dental filling is because they have a cavity. If the cavity has not yet reached the inner pulp of the tooth, a filling can be placed. Dental fillings offer both cosmetic as well as restorative benefits. They help to replace areas that have decayed so that the tooth does not look compromised.
What makes your child a candidate for Dental Fillings?
With an examination, we can help in determining if your child needs a dental filling. The filling process is easy and quick, so kids of all ages can benefit from this restorative option. If your child has an older filling that needs replacement, we can easily do this in our office. If your child needs a filling, it is important that they come in for treatment as soon as possible to prevent the decay from getting worse.
What happens during the Dental Filling procedure?
We will first administer a local anesthetic to numb the area. Once your child is comfortable, we will remove any decay from the tooth. The hole left behind is then prepared to receive the tooth-colored filling. We use composite resin material to fill this small hole. Excess filling material is removed and the remaining filling is cured into place with a bright light. The process can be repeated for any other cavities that are found within the area. Your child should avoid eating anything until the local anesthetic effects have fully worn off.
