Dental Bonding

What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a procedure that involves repairing damaged or unevenly spaced teeth at the front of your child’s smile. Using tooth-colored composite resin, we will fill in gaps, spaces and areas of a tooth that have chipped or broken. Bonding is an easy procedure that typically doesn’t require anesthetic. Your child will have the bonding in place for years before replacement is needed.

Why might Dental Bonding be needed?

The most common reason for needing bonding is because a tooth has chipped. Kids often chip their teeth while playing sports, rough-housing with siblings or simply biting down into something hard. Another reason for needing bonding is because your child has gaps and spaces between their front teeth. Bonding can help to fill in areas that feel sharp or jagged.

Who is a candidate for Dental Bonding?

To determine if your child would benefit from bonding, we will examine their teeth. Bonding is ideal for most kids because of the fact that the procedure itself is noninvasive. In most cases, little to no anesthetic is required to place bonding. Older bonding can be replaced easily in our office at your family’s convenience.

What happens during the Dental Bonding procedure?

The bonding procedure is relatively straightforward. We first prepare the tooth to receive the bonding material. This includes smoothing out any rough or jagged edges and applying a bonding gel. We then match composite resin to your child’s smile and put it over the area that is spaced or damaged. We smooth and detail the material into place and then cure it with a bright light. This ensures that the bonding is securely in place and will not move, shift or fall off. Your child can then benefit from a full, healthy-looking smile regardless of their age. They should brush and floss their teeth normally in order to keep their smile clean, healthy and bright.
